The clicking sound is indicative of a head failure. The heads can no longer find track 0. They then go into a constant seek pattern, hence the clicking noise. Follow these instructions on how to package and ship a hard drive.

Data Recovery Zone does not charge for the evaluation of your media; furthermore, we do not participate in the “high/low” pricing quote model. (Typically between $500-$2,500.00) We have found that most companies tend to charge on the high end of the quote range. Some recovery companies also have a tendency to exaggerate turn around times . We understand that this can be a stressful time for you and believe that you should be fully informed in your recovery process.

Laptop and notebook drives are much smaller and more fragile than their desktop cousins, consequently they require a more delicate and exacting touch to repair and recover. However, the steps listed above for what you, the user, can do to minimize further data loss remains basically the same, with the exception of:

1. Unless the drive was designed to be removed by simply sliding out of the casing, do not attempt to remove it yourself.
2. If you can remove the drive easily, be sure not to put any undue stress on it by applying pressure to the housing on the drive.
3. Take extra care when packaging a laptop drive for shipping, so as not to incur any further damage before reaching one of our labs.

If at all possible, remove the media from the computer. Get expert help if necessary. Send us just the hard drive(s), tape(s), floppy, jaz, zip, optical, flashcard, microdrive etc..

Handle a hard disk drive as you would handle an egg. Handle failed hard disk drives with the same care as new drives.

Use the original shipping materials, if you still have them. If not, they are relatively easy to replicate:

Wrap media in an anti-static bag or tinfoil to prevent Static Electricity.
Use a box that is at least twice the size of the media so that the media can be suspended in the middle of the box. We recommend a minimum of two inches of insulation all around for a 1 Kilo drive.
Pack securely with foam, bubble wrap, or newspaper so the media will not move from the middle of the box. Avoid using peanuts as contents will settle to the bottom of the box.
If sending a computer, laptop or notebook, use great care to ensure proper cushioning and protection. We recommend at least 7 inches for insulation. The heavier the unit, the more insulation required.

Powervault RAID Data Recovery

Dell raids come either built into the motherboard (MLB, main logic board) or are plug in to the PCI slot 32bit or 64bit.
Raid Failures on: Raid 0, Raid 1, Raid 5, Raid 10, Raid 50
Broken Raid- More than one drive is out on the raid during operation and it fails the raid.
Most times this happens while the raid is in a crippled state and trying to replace the bad drive a good drive is pulled or replaced while the raid is powered off. Both will result in a Failed Raid.

ROM UPGRADES, know as flashing the rom bios on a lot of the PERC raid controllers and others will cause the drives to not be recognized.
This happens due to the changes in the firmware to recognize the partition and will cause partition damage. Replacing the old firmware will not help.

This is just plain old hard drive failure that must occur at sometime. Sometimes its more than one drive and there comes the problem. The raid can only have one failure unless it’s a mirrored raid.

Unix Data Recovery

Data Recovery Zone engineers operate in a Unix environment for many reasons. This fact gives us higher capabilities concerning SCO and other proprietary X systems.

We charge not a cent more for Unix, Mac, Sun, Linux than Windows operating systems.

There are a number of possibilities when faced with Unix data recovery, depending on what you have and what your time frame is. In general, we make archives from the effected machine and transfer the entire volume(s) utilizing advanced cloning techniques rather than transferring individual files one by one. You might do that with tar, for example, using something like:

cd /somedir
tar cvf /tmp/files.tar .

Which will create an archive of the current directory into /tmp/files.tar which can be transferred to the new machine and extracted with:

cd /newdir
tar xvf /tmp/files.tar

The Recovery Process

Phone Consultation – Each recovery begins with a simple phone call to DRZ. One of our trained, professional recovery specialists will discuss your particular need.

To allow us to give the best possible service, please have on hand the make, model and manufacturer of the drive or media as well as a description describing the problem or failure occurring with your device. We will then give you an evaluation cost and ask for your daytime phone number, fax number and email address.

A RMA or job number will then be issued and shipping instructions given.

Evaluation – The evaluation is where one of our recovery specialists carefully inspects your device or media arrive at an accurate diagnosis of the problem. While each evaluation is different depending on the type of damage and device or media being checked, an evaluation usually involves mechanical diagnostics, creating a sector copy, and assessing data integrity.

Upon completion, you will be informed of your data’s prognosis and if any parts will be necessary for a successful recovery. Evaluations begin within 12-24 hours of receipt of the device or media.

Recovery – Only upon receiving your authorization will we proceed with the process of recovering your data from your device or media.

For mechanical damage, failed or compromised parts are replaced in a clean environment using exact replacement parts to ensure compliance with manufacturer warranty requirements. Specialized software is also employed to create an accurate image of your data. Some examples of parts that fail are read/write heads and assemblies, magnets, motors, and logic boards.

If there is no mechanical damage, or after the mechanical damage has been repaired, the next step is logical recovery. This type of recovery uses high-tech software to extract all possible data from the device or media by either repairing the low-level file system, extracting data from fragments found in the data image or both.

In the case of a malicious virus having caused the damage to the original data, great care will be taken to disinfect your system of the offending virus before restoring the data.

Once data has been extracted, it is then compiled and restored on the original or repaired device or media without voiding or nullifying any existing manufacturer warranty.

Our policy is to offer full disclosure on all that will be done and has been done throughout the recovery process. Recovery time typically ranges from 1-5 days depending on circumstances such as device or media capacity size, amount of data to recover, amount of physical repair required and complexity of file system.

What to Send

If at all possible, remove the media from the computer. Get expert help if necessary. Send us just the hard drive(s), tape(s), floppy, jaz, zip, optical, flashcard, microdrive etc..

How to Send Your Media

Wrap media in an anti-static bag or tinfoil to prevent Stacic Electricity.
Use a box that is at least twice the size of the media so that the media can be suspended in the middle of the box. We recommend a minimum of two inches of insulation all around for a 2 lb drive.
Pack securely with foam, bubble wrap, or newspaper so the media will not move from the middle of the box. Avoid using peanuts as contents will settle to the bottom of the box.
If sending a computer, laptop or notebook, use great care to ensure proper cushioning and protection. We recommend at least 6 inches for insulation. The heavier the unit, the more insulation required.
Handle a hard disk drive as you would handle an egg. Handle failed hard disk drives with the same care as new drives. Use the original shipping materials, if you still have them. If not, they are relatively easy to replicate.
